For Writers

In addition to being a novelist and short story writer, I am also a writing tutor and mentor. I offer:

I also offer an editorial service for writers planning to publish independently.

Here’s what some very talented former students have said about my courses, critiques and mentoring

‘Alison’s critique advice is just so so wonderful. I can’t believe how helpful it is. Her advice and knowledge have been spot-on every single time. Not only does she point out the little niggles that I knew, in my heart of hearts, should probably be addressed, but she sees the things I can’t see because I’m simply too close to the manuscript. She helped make my debut novel The Forgotten Village worthy of both agent and publisher attention. I wouldn’t be without her.’ Lorna Cook

‘Alison is a fabulous teacher and it was an absolute pleasure to be in her session.’ Cathy Bramley

‘I’m so glad I took Alison’s course, her enthusiasm for my writing gave me great confidence, and she was particularly good at helping me to work out how to make it better. After her editing workshop, I applied what I had learned to my first draft and my publisher declared me ‘Queen of Edits’. I’ve been to three different courses now and every time I’ve left feeling excited about my writing and able to keep going no matter what difficulties I was having before I arrived.’ Pippa James

About Alison – the tutor

I am a published novelist and short story writer both individually and writing in collaboration. I completed a BA (Hons) degree in Creative Writing with the University of Birmingham in 2008. I’m also a qualified teacher, specialising in teaching adults. I’ve been teaching creative writing since 2009, and have taught community groups, one-off workshops, adult education courses, and I’ve tutored for the University of Worcester and the Open University. I also offer a  manuscript critique service and individual mentoring for developing authors , and structural and developmental editing for writers planning to publish independently.

Past students, and clients, have gone on to achieve agent representation, publication with traditional publishers – including Aria, Avon, Boldwood, Bookouture, Headline and HQ – and to self-publish successfully.

I offer tutoring and editorial advice in relation to most areas of fiction, but my strongest expertise is in commercial fiction, particularly commercial womens’, romantic fiction, book club fiction and crime. In addition to being a former Chair of Romantic Novelists’ Association, I am also a member of NAWG, and the Society of Authors. In 2022 I was shortlisted for the RNA’s Indie Editor of the Year award at their annual Industry Awards.
